Day 3 and 4 - Music lives on and on
Jan 4-5 Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico
It's easy to get used to the oldness of the city - the old city - the streets are narrow, the buildings are close together, and there is colonial architecture everywhere. We are in old San Juan - arrived this morning. So far, we've had a great autentico meal - arroz, habichelas, tostones, aguacate, y un piña colada. It was delicious - then we drove into OSJ and it was a nightmare drive... just bumper to bumper traffic.
But our Air-b-n-b is special - it transmits an old world feeling - the furniture is odd, throne-like chairs, and several expressionist-like paintings, and vaulted ceilings with Spanish style veranda windows.
On the flight over, I finished James by Percival Everett. It is a retelling of The adventures of Huckleberry Finn - but told from the slave, Jim's, perspective. There is a rich philosophical exploration of what it means to be a real person... not just someone's property!
today's picture is of the Cotton Club circa 1930.
Slavery's owning
another human being yet
what sense can be made?
entertain me and
let me make my assumptions
you are still all you
